I saw this on CNN and other news channels. There is a lot of talk now since the publishing from TIME magazine’s article on Generation M: M for multitasking
Now you have to think, multitasking is a good thing right? Well it depends. If you are mutlitasking like baking bread and reading a book at the same time, sure. If you are writing an essay on 18th Century civilizations while listening to Kelly Clarkson and browsing through Facebook accounts, then no. The speculation is that multitasking takes away from the quality and depth of the work accomplished. Instead of emmersing into a subject and taking in the different sense, this generation is merely skimming the surface, only taking in what is sufficient and moving on. Talk about passion right? It seems that many are becoming the Jack of All Trade, but Master to None.
despite their “mystique” as master multitaskers. “The bottom line is that you can’t simultaneously be thinking about your tax return and reading an essay, just as you can’t talk to yourself about two things at once,” he says. “If a teenager is trying to have a conversation on an e-mail chat line while doing algebra, she’ll suffer a decrease in efficiency, compared to if she just thought about algebra until she was done.
Very insightful read, something that I can see in our generation as well. Wouldn’t you agree?
