Working at Safeco, working on my car (maintenance), working for Banana Republic.. whew. I sorta like it! Other than keeping busy with all these responsibilities, I’m having fun, especially working with my fellow BR buds.
Today I went to an Information Exchange about mobile technology in Safeco and “enabling business.” It was, not, interesting. The only interesting part was when they gave scenarios for claims agents and how much impact mobile technology would have when fully functional. I’m here thinking wow, I could have thought of that when I was 12. In fact, I think I did.. in some respect. All the technology they were talking about were stuff I’ve been familiar with for some time now and I was anxious to suggest other technologies and innovations that could provide greater benefit. From this experience, I realized how much different it is in such a business oriented environment. Safeco’s revenue last year was around $60-70bil while Microsoft’s Research & Development (R&D) spent $90bil. Even though this information is not surprising, the margin of difference in priority and how incredible the amnout of resources invested spans is very interesting. All this made me realize that I would enjoy a more leading-edge company. Even though innovation is encouraged at Safeco, their idea of innovation is to how to make existing technology and practices more useful and develop methods/processes that will provide greater cost-efficiency. It’s like they just discovered how much more work they can complete with a PDA. For myself, I like to just imagine and think about things that would never exist but would be pretty damn sweet if it happened. I guess I’m just like a boy and want to make new toys for myself to play with. I’m definately learning a lot from these first few weeks and I still have a lot of time still to learn more! I still think upper management is where I would like to head, but not before playing around with gizmos and gadgets!
I just had a fun thought. Wouldnt it be fun if life would play music in the background for you? Like in movies, or TV, when a certain event happens or a theme specific scene enters, music plays. The music plays such an influencial role in the setting of the moment. Imagine how much more exciting experiences in our lives would be if there was that one great romance song that played when you had your first kiss or when that heavy rock guitar rips a chord as your adrenaline pumps running for home plate. Think of the possibilities! There would be the fear of being annoyed with it, but then again, it could be something we are accustomed to after it becomes a part of us. I need more music.
What are groups you can always come back to no matter what mood, what day, how old or where you are?
